Celebrating the best of British

Jessica Brown

Our opening news spread this week is characterised by some real displays of excellence by British fashion businesses.

Our opening news spread this week is characterised by some real displays of excellence by British fashion businesses.

Contrasted with last week’s rather unnerving theme of forthcoming price hikes, All Saints’ bold move to stick two fingers up to the current climate and successfully tackle the US market dovetails nicely with a set of strong full-year figures from New Look, one of the UK’s best homegrown chains, which has helped set the standard for global fast-fashion businesses.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, George Davies, a long-standing hero of the high street, has admitted that getting GIVe, his latest womenswear venture, right has proved more challenging than he had imagined, even going so far as to say that he almost quit fashion, believing he had “lost it”. Davies’ concept needs some work to find its footing but it continues to trade well with its indie department store partners, suggesting it does have potential. Launching a new venture in the current climate was always going to be brave and Davies deserves credit for being one of the few retailers with the gall to do such a thing.

This week marks the launch of the Drapers Awards 2010, an event we set up 20 years ago to honour just these sort of businesses and their management teams. As always, we will recognise independents, multiples and branded suppliers who have either innovated or thrived over the past 12 months. The power of extra marketing tools such as winning an Award should not be underestimated. I look forward to hearing about your bold and effective business decisions before the closing date for entries on July 29.
