Footwear chain Charles Clinkard will move to a new warehouse and office in Middlesbrough next September to prepare for its growing online business.
At 55,000 sq ft the warehouse, a former B&Q store, is nearly twice the size of the retailer’s current unit (30,000 sq ft) and is located just five miles away.
Charles Clinkard, managing director of the family-run business, said the new space will accommodate the rising levels of stock needed to keep up with online demand.
Online sales will account for £6m of the company’s predicted total annual sales of £36m for the year to January 31 and Clinkard wants to grow this to £10m over the next three years.
“Look at the John Lewises of this world; they are doing over 20% of their turnover on the web,” said Clinkard. “We’re getting close, but we’d like to be doing 25% to 30% online. That should be the target.
“The new space will hold a lot more stock and will be great for business. It is setting us up for the future, providing us with the opportunity to grow to the next level.”
