Cherokee sale in the offing

US casualwear brand Cherokee has hired Goldman Sachs to investigate options for maximising shareholder value, which could lead to a sale of the company.

The brand owner which licenses its label to Tesco in the UK, Ireland, Asia and Europe, declined to comment further until Goldman Sachs had completed its analysis and the board had approved its suggestions.

Cherokee has seen US sales slip back and has also been affected by the weakness of the US dollar. According to reports, in 2000 sales of Cherokee in Target, the brand's US partner, made up 66% of its total revenue. However Target only represents 24% of today's revenue.
