Clothes Show scouts talent

Drapers and New Look are backing the inaugural Young Textile Designer of the Year competition in partnership with Clothes Show London, which is staging its first show in the capital next May.

Student textile designers are invited to design a print for a New Look prom dress, according to a brief set by the high street retailer. The winning print, chosen by a panel of industry experts, will be used on a dress in New Look’s summer 09 collection, modelled on the catwalk at Clothes Show London and featured in Drapers. The winner will receive a £1,000 cash prize.

Clothes Show Live founder Gavin Brown said the competition – part of the new British Textile Awards – would “provide a platform for emerging textile designers to launch themselves into the mainstream.”

New Look head of press Peter Robinson said the winning student would also gain an insight into the high street supply chain. “[They will] see the design taken from original concept through the myriad processes of production and finally arriving on the shop floor of one of Britain’s leading retailers,” he said.

Clothes Show London will be staged at Excel from May 29 to May 31. The larger Birmingham edition will continue to run at the NEC from December 5 to December 10.
