Clothing and footwear sales remain stable in January

Sales across clothing and footwear stores were unchanged during January according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS) despite revenues across the total retail sector growing.

Year-on-year the quantity of products bought in the retail industry grew for the second consecutive month, increasing by 4.3% in January, while the amount spent during the month rose by 4.4% to £31.9bn.

Volume sales across the clothing and footwear sector were flat compared with the same time last year, while the amount of money spent on products rose 1.4%. Online sales grew 12.9%.

During the month for every pound spent in the retail industry 41 pence was in non-food stores and six pence at non-store retailers.
