Clothing and footwear sales up 7.4% in September

Textile, clothing and footwear sales rose 7.4% year on year in September, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Overall, retail sales rose 6.5% for the month. Average store prices, including petrol, fell by 3.6% year on year in September, but the volume bought was up 0.9% and the amount spent increased by 2.7%.

The value of online sales increased by 15.2% year on year and by 4.5% compared with August. Textile, clothing and footwear sales were up 10.9% online.

The figures, which cover the period August 30 to October 3, were boosted by the inclusion of the late bank holiday.
