Clothing sales rise at John Lewis as temperatures drop

The colder weather combined with the final throes of clearance delivered a 16.2% uplift in fashion sales at John Lewis.

Clothing was one of the department store group’s top performing categories in the week to January 16. Shoppers were buying both seasonal and new seasons lines, it said.

Overall sales at John Lewis were up 15.7% year-on-year to £85.9m, with online sales climbing 30.8%.

John Lewis director of selling, David Barford, brought the business’s discount period to a close, adding: “Our clearance has now officially ended and exciting new lines are starting to arrive in shops and online.”
