Clothing sales slide despite Valentine’s Day lingerie boost

UK clothing sales for the week to 18 February fell 6.2% year on year despite a Valentine’s Day boost to lingerie sales.

Footwear sales suffered an even bigger fall as they plunged 17.6% compared with the same week last year, the BDO High Street Sales Tracker indicates.

Total fashion like-for-like sales were down 2.5% year on year as 64% of respondents reported negative sales growth in-store this weekend.

In comparison, sales were up 0.7% in the same week last year.

The sales fall came despite a 1.1% increase in footfall for the most recent week of trading, which included warmer weekend weather and half-term holidays in many areas of the UK.

Footfall on the high street increased 2.9%, while footfall at retail parks and shopping centres was down 0.1% and 1.3% respectively.
