Clothing sales up at Woolies

Clothing sales at Woolworths rose by almost 5% for the 38 weeks to 27 October against last year.

Chief executive Trevor Bish-Jones said clothing sales had been boosted by sales of Halloween merchandise. Like-for-like sales of Halloween costumes were up double-digits and he added that Woolworths' Ladybird clothing range continued to be a key performer in the business.

He said: "Only a few players have grown market share this year and Ladybird is one of them."

Ladybird has secured a new retail partner in India called RPG, and it will open concessions in the country in the first quarter of next year.

Total group sales for Woolworths were up 16.6% during the period, with retail like-for-like sales down 0.4%.
