Coast on the hunt for bigger stores

Occasionwear retailer Coast is on the hunt for larger-format stores across the UK as it opens its London flagship on
Oxford Street.

The store, which opens tomorrow (June 29), was previously occupied by Clinton Cards and at 6,000 sq ft is the retailer’s largest store. The average Coast store is 1,400 sq ft.

Coast managing director Margaret McDonald said the retailer is now seeking larger store locations for future shops as it will allow it to showcase its full product range in “the best possible environment”. McDonald declined to say how many stores Coast planned to open.

She said: “We did a lot of customer research last year and one of the main things we found was that with occasionwear the customer wants to see as much as possible in terms of product and they also want the space to be able to spend time trying that product on.”

McDonald added that about 30% of the clothing and 60% of the accessories in the flagship are exclusive to the store,
including a vintage-inspired range.

Coast said it planned to open another larger-format store before the end of the year but could not confirm the location
at this stage.
