This may come as a shock to some but as a consumer I hate Sales.
I can’t think of anything worse than rummaging around in a frantic attempt to snap up a low-priced item, while in the meantime getting my toes trodden on by other desperate shoppers.
The stores are jam-packed with customers, many of whom have been queuing for hours to get in.
At my local Next, shoppers were camped outside the store at 2am on Boxing Day morning, raring to get the best deals. Surely the festive period is a time to spend at the heart of a warm family home - not sleeping on concrete in the hope of a discounted jumper.
One employee at Next’s Halifax branch even tweeted: “Police cars, riot vans & a member of staff got hit by someone. Love working the #NextSale”.
It seems as though all normal social etiquette goes out of the window during promotional periods as people rummage furiously searching for a bargain, not caring who they barge out of the way in the process.
I don’t really think that the garments are bargains at all. People seem to have forgotten that the items sold in Sales are the things that couldn’t previously be sold and so the majority of clothes found in the Sales will be ill fitting pieces in ghastly colours.
But nothing riles me more than going into shops post-Christmas to see items I bought as presents, and paid full price for, reduced. It really demeans the value of the gifts I have bought and ultimately deters me from returning to that particular retailer in the future.
So when I see a fluorescent sign advertising 50% off it is more of a turn off than a turn on.
I shall be steering clear until new season’s stock has arrived when shop without being bruised.
Update: The extremity of shopping was fully illustrated just before Christmas when a 60 year old victim was hospitalised after a “trolley rage” attack. According to the Daily Mail the man broke a hip and wrist after being knocked to the ground by a woman in Marks & Spencer.
If this kind of thing is happening in M&S pre-Sale, then I can only imagine how enraged shoppers might get during the promotions.
