London Collections: Men preview: Ones to Watch – Bobby Abley

In the run up to January’s London Collections: Men, Drapers’ junior fashion editor Graeme Moran chats with the up-and-coming names worth keeping an eye on.

Since launching in 2009, the Fashion East installations have excelled at discovering and supporting the newest names and the brightest up-and-comers in London’s menswear scene. And this season will be no different.

January’s installation will introduce us to Bobby Abley, the Ravensbourne College graduate who will show his second official collection alongside other new boy Joseph Turvey, and the likes of Kit Neale, Nasir Mazhar and Maarten van der Horst.

Having cut his teeth working at the likes of McQueen and Jeremy Scott, Abley’s penchant for teddy bear motifs, bold, kitschy prints and edgy, fetishy leather, promises to make autumn 13’s edition of Fashion East installations one of the best tickets in town. This is what Bobby had to say…

What can we expect from your autumn 13 collection?

Space and bears. Fun and serious menswear.

What were your inspirations?

I have been watching a lot of the old Twilight Zone television series lately so I started pulling inspiration from that. The other-worldly story lines and the grey scale colors. I mixed this with a bit of Astro Boy and the Jetsons to bring in some primary colour and animated print.

What are the key fabrics and colours?

I’m using grey and sepia colored leather, cotton satins, jersey and a couple of interesting alternative fabrics in primary blues and hints of red.

How did it feel to be chosen as part of the Fashion East installations?

Amazing. It’s a huge platform, so a definite honor for me to be a part of it. Also a great feeling that my work has been acknowledged. I’m very grateful to Lulu Kennedy and the whole team at Fashion East.

Sum up your designs in three words?

Bold, brave and fun.

What other collections are you looking forward to seeing at London Collections: Men?

Alex Mattson is showing with Red Bull Ccatwalk studios and they have collaborated on a track with Zebra Katz for his presentation so I can’t wait to see this live! And Kit Neale, I love his prints and am super excited to show alongside him at Fashion East.

Bobby Abley will show at London Collections: Men as part of the Fashion East Menswear Installations:

January 7, St James’

16:30 - 18:30
