Micam Preview

My levels of excitement this last week can only mean one thing. For me it’s the most wonderful time of the year and, unlike Christmas, the event I am talking about actually happens twice a year.

Yes, that’s right. Micam starts on Sunday. While some of my contacts in the footwear trade may heave a heavy sigh that it is time for yet another tradeshow, my enthusiasm for these shows refuses to wane, particularly when it comes to Micam.

Still considered by many to be the premier international footwear tradeshow, Micam is, in my opinion, the destination in Europe to see the best selection of footwear brands for the coming season.

Some of those who have been in the trade a long time argue that Micam is that not the show it once was, but I suspect this may be more of a comment on the state of tradeshows in general, than a slight on Micam itself.

This will be my fourth season at Micam and if previous seasons are anything to go by, all of the major UK buyers from the likes of Asos, Office, Debenhams, Zalando, New Look and Schuh will be doing the rounds at Milan’s Fiero Milano exhibition centre.

The show kicks off on Sunday (September 16) and as usual the British Footwear Association (BFA) will be supporting over 60 British brands at the show including everyone from LK Bennett through to Steptronic.

Some of the brands I am most looking forward to seeing include ballet pump brand French Sole, who are a first time exhibitor at Micam this season. The brand has a new director - Russell Downing who was formally at M&S so I will be interested to meet him and hear his plans for the business.

Additionally men’s footwear brand Northern Cobbler, which has caught my eye a couple of times in previous seasons, was reported to have had one of the busiest stands at US-based footwear tradeshow Magic in August so I will be keen to see what they have got lined-up for Spring 13.

On the women’s side, premium footwear brand Kat Maconie has been going from strength-to-strength and is fast becoming an established UK brand – so much so I recognised a pair of her shoes worn by a commuter on the tube earlier this week.

Away from the show, and also very exciting, is the fact that Drapers will be launching its Footwear and Accessories Awards 2013 at Micam on Tuesday (September 18).

Stay tuned to Drapersonline.com for exclusive online content from Micam and news on the launch of the awards.
