There was innovation aplenty at The Wearable Technology Show, on 7-8 March at London’s Excel exhibition centre in Greenwich.
The technology on show applicable to the fashion industry was largely for the sports market, in the form of performance-enhancing or -measuring fabrics and applications, alongside a healthy virtual reality (VR) offer. But there was little on show for the mainstream fashion market.
Doubleme caught Drapers eye with its real-time 3D holo-motion capture and holographic virtual reality headset (pictured). The technology had already been used at London Fashion Week in September by Martine Jarlgaard London, which brought the spring 17 collection to life as holograms.
However, the fitness market was spoilt for choice. One stand that stood out Myzone, held its global launch of a belt that measures the wearer’s heart rate and the amount of effort they are putting into the activity. The technology is also available built in to gym bra tops and men’s sports T-shirts. Furthermore, the app offers a subscription service to more than 500 work-out videos, which the user can watch as they exercise.
Aiq Smart Clothing showcased its updated BioMan 100 heart rate-monitoring fitness shirt. With smaller sensors, this 90% polyester and 10% knitted spandex tank top claims to offer maximum accuracy and comfort.
High-tech footwear accessories on show included the Path Finder shoe attachment. Path Finder had its global proto-type on display, which guides the wearer’s movement.
These were just a handful of the innovations from the show, which, despite being a bit dark and gloomy in presentation, was certainly worth visiting to see where the wearables market is heading.
