Contactless payments reach £380m

UK shoppers spent more than £380m using contactless payments in December, while overall spending on plastic increased to £49.1bn during the month.

Debit card spending rose 7.2% year-on-year to over £34.5bn and credit card spending increased by 4.4% to £14.6bn, according to the UK Cards Association.

The average card transaction fell from £44.22 to £42.88 in the year.

Contactless payments are limited to a maximum of £20 but will be increased to £30 in September.
