Cool weather boosts fashion sales

Cooler weather boosted fashion sales last week, according to BDO, as sales were up 2.8% on last year.

The results of the latest High Street Sales Tracker for the week to 13 January mark the fifth consecutive week of sales growth for the sector.

Lower temperatures and sporadic showers meant that more shoppers opted to make their purchases online.

In-store, like-for-like fashion sales dropped 2.9% with the high street suffering the worst footfall decline of 2.2%. Shopping centre footfall fell 1.5% while retail parks experienced 0.3% more visitors than the same week last year.

Across all categories, in-store like-for-like sales dropped 3.1% but non-store sales grew 17% leading to total growth of 2%.
