Cross-border trade to rocket over Christmas

Cross-border trade in the UK is expected to increase by 57% this Christmas to £1.4m in retail sales, new research has revealed.

Foreign citizens purchasing from UK-based stores will make up one third (33.3%) of total European sales from overseas retailers this Christmas, according to a survey of 50 major UK retailers and 1,000 British consumers.

A study by VoucherCodes in conjunction with the Centre for Retail Research also found that across the whole of Europe, Christmas cross-border trade is expected to rise by 36.2% to £4.3bn in 2017 year-on-year.

Total Christmas spending in the UK was also predicted to reach £78.7bn this year, up 1.4% from 2016 (£77.6 bn).
