Debenhams has signed to open a 113,000 sq ft anchor store at the Intu Watford shopping centre, as part of its 400,000 sq ft extension.
The extension, which started in late 2015, will house up to 16 stores, 10 restaurants and a nine-screen Imax cinema when complete.
“Watford has been a long-term target location for us,” said Debenhams property director Rob Hadfield. “With consistently high levels of customer requests for a new store there, the town was in our top five list of planned sites.
“The extension to Intu Watford is a great setting for a new Debenhams department store. The existing footfall at the centre is really strong and the affluent catchment is perfect for our exclusive Designers at Debenhams portfolio of brands.”
Intu Watford is also anchored by John Lewis and Marks & Spencer.
Once the work is complete, property research consultancy CACI estimates that Watford will be part of its top 20 ranking for national retail destinations, alongside Edinburgh and Bristol.
