Debenhams to launch second 20% off Sale tomorrow

Debenhams will launch a second Mega Day Sale offering discounts of up to 20% and starting tomorrow.

Debenhams said the Mega Day would run from December 3 to December 5 and would offer 20% off all womenswear and menswear.

It follows a similar Sale held by Debenhams in the third week of November, which the department store extended from three days to five days, in an attempt to stimulate consumer spending.

Debenhams held a similar pre-Christmas promotion around the same time last year but at that time it offered 10% off over a four-day period. Pali International retail analyst Nick Bubb said this week’s promotion was planned.

Debenhams’ deputy chief executive Michael Sharp said: “We’re back by popular demand - it’s as simple as that. We’re delivering fantastic designer value at a time when customers tell us they want it; after all that’s our job.”

“What’s more we’re not forcing people to shop on just one day, unlike some stores. We’ve spread these credit crunching offers over three, so customers can shop when it’s convenient for them, not the other way round.”

Marks & Spencer is expected to hold a second one-day 20% off promotion this Thursday.

It is unclear whether the last raft of pre-Christmas discounting had a significant effect on sales. While Debenhams said it had seen customer numbers rise by two-thirds during its November promotion, figures from Experian showed that overall shopper numbers for the week were down 3.3%.
