Debenhams XL menswear sales rocket

Sales of plus-size menswear have soared by 170% at Debenhams in the last two years.

The department store group’s Big & Tall range now extends to XXXXXL (62 to 64 inch chest and a 20 inch collar) in response to rising demand from shoppers. Previously its largest size was XXXL.

Debenhams said one in nine of all menswear purchases in its stores were now larger than size XXL (50 to 52 inch chest and 18 inch collar).

By region, the biggest rise in demand for larger sizes has come from East Anglia, followed by the East and West Midlands and the southeast.

Debenhams’ menswear trading director Paul Baldwin said: “We recognise men are in general taller and stronger than previous generations, and there is growing demand for mainstream men’s fashion in larger sizes.”

Big & Tall is available in all Debenhams stores and its sales over the past six months are set to exceed its total sales for the whole of last year.

  • Plus Clothing does come with its own problems, in that it can affect your regular size business if you get known for being a 'big size store'. Debenhams may like their initial prospects with this, but they must tread very carefully on this.
