‘Designing maternitywear isn’t the job of a celebrity’

Over the past few years the fashion world has been bombarded with celebrity ‘designers’, selling their collections in high street stores.

No doubt the stores have actively sought out famous names to be linked with to increase sales, but in my opinion there are many extremely talented designers who can create beautiful clothes that will sell just as much, if not more.

This year though, there is a new movement occurring: the celebrity mums starting their own maternity brands. While I would applaud anyone who can design lovely clothes, especially when it comes to maternitywear, it should be a job for a hard-working designer. Of course, there are no qualms that the likes of Jessica Simpson and Beyoncé have great style and are followed and copied by many, but is it just another way for them to earn even more money? Perhaps they will help highlight the need for fashionable maternitywear and have been asked to perform this task. Or maybe being pregnant themselves and disgruntled with the shopping choices gave them the incentive to enter this market?

Whatever their reasons, I hope they will do good rather than any possible harm to the sector, and perhaps the fashion world will see some great designs on the everyday mum to be.
