Discounting spreads across the high street

Selfridges, Gap, Arcadia and Bhs have joined the raft of retailers offering discounts on the high street in an effort to get consumers back out shopping.

Sir Philip Green's Arcadia-owned Dorothy Perkins and Wallis and department store Bhs advertised their 20% price cuts on television last night. Dorothy Perkins' 20% off deal ends today while Bhs' starts today and ends tomorrow.

Selfridges and Gap have both launched "secret Sales" and are circulating "Friends and Family" vouchers. Selfridges is offering shoppers 20% off starting on Monday November 24 running through to November 30. Gap launched a 30% off voucher this week which is valid until November 30.

Marks & Spencer and Debenhams were also offering 20% off yesterday - M&S' first pre-Christmas promotion for four years.

The M&S one-day Sale ended last night, though some stores were open until midnight to capitalise on the promotion. M&S chairman Sir Stuart Rose said the offer had, "touched a nerve" with customers. He added: "It has been a riot."

Debenhams launched a three-day price cutting Sale yesterday with discounts of up to 25%. Earlier this week Debenhams deputy chief executive Michael Sharp told the Drapers Fashion Summit that retailers were "staring into the face of the worst Christmas we have ever had."
