Drapers’ editorial director Eric Musgrave was named Business Media Editor of the Year at the prestigious Professional Publishers Association awards last night (July 9). It was precisely two years and four days since he returned to Drapers after a seven-year absence.
Musgrave was described as “a legend in his industry” at the annual gathering of the magazine sector at Grosvenor House, London, In the category, the judges focused “on the personal contribution of the editor to a business title, taking into account the overall quality of the journalism, evidence of the editor’s commercial awareness and an innovative approach to extending the brand across platforms”.
Since returning to Drapers on July 5 2013, Musgrave has reorganised the editorial team, overseen a redesign of the print product, contributed to a complete overhaul of the website and seen the Drapers app launched, as well as remodelling its four national awards, two annual forums and various events including Next Generation and the Drapers Inner Circle networking dinners.
In 2003 Musgrave won this award in recognition of his work in creating the modern Drapers in October 2002 from the merger of Drapers Record (founded 1887) and Menswear (founded 1902). Of his second victory, Musgrave, who began his career as a junior reporter on Drapers Record on January 28 1980, commented: “I am thrilled to get this top media award again after a 12-year gap. For me personally it is recognition of two years of relentless hard work and I want to share the plaudits with the extensive team that works so enthusiastically across Drapers’ many activities. This is an accolade for Drapers, not only for me.
“Like the fashion retailing sector we serve, B2B publishing is undergoing huge change but, as with fashion retailing, the fundamentals remain the same. Drapers’ role is to provide its subscribers with essential fashion business intelligence in any way they find relevant. We will continue to evolve with the fabulous industry we report upon.”
In a night of recognition for Drapers at the PPA Awards, Alison Fisher, Drapers’ art editor, was shortlisted in the Business Media Designer of the Year category, as was Drapers itself in the Business Magazine of the Year section.
