Topman digital director Gareth Rees-John tells Drapers Jill Geoghegan that the industry needs more data scientists

Speaking at Drapers annual careers and networking conference for aspiring fashion professionals at the beginning of their careers, Rees-John said: “I have creative people knocking down my door for jobs, and fashion businesses are naturally very good at attracting that type of person, but we need a balance.”

He added: “You can’t get enough of good data analysts, and they are in such high demand that they can command very high salaries with only a couple of years of experience. Retailers are capturing so much data now, but we need the people to be able to mine it and currently there aren’t enough people to do it.”

He also told the audience at the event, which is now in its seventh year and was held at London’s 30 Euston Square, that he could not understand why schools did not teach newer skills such as coding, given the increased importance of digital.
