Easter break boosts sales at John Lewis

The first week of the Easter break has bolstered sales at John Lewis, with revenues up 13% year-on-year.

In the seven days to April 12 accessories were 30% up; shoes were up 19% and fashion accessories were up 17%, which John Lewis put down to “great trading in sunglasses thanks to the sunny weather”.

Fashion grew sales by 11.4%, most of which came from clothing. Menswear did particularly well, up 24%. The school holidays had an impact, with boyswear up 29% and girlswear up 21%.

A new 92,000 sq ft store opened in York, featuring low-energy lighting, a roof-mounted solar energy system and a wildlife wall “which acts as a safe habitat for passing migrating bats”.

Trading there was “well ahead of expectations”, contributing to overall group performance.

Online continued a strong run for John Lewis, up 35.8% versus last year, underpinned by very solid traffic and conversion. Menswear and sports categories were up 53% online, while womenswear rose 42%.
