Ebay takes on Amazon UK with price-match guarantees

Online auction site Ebay has launched a price-match guarantee on more than 20,000 items on its UK site, in a bid to rival retailers such as Amazon and John Lewis.

Ebay will guarantee that prices for new items in its UK “deals programme” will be the best available online, or match a rival’s lower price for the identical item.

Price comparisons will be drawn from a list of six online retailers in the UK: Amazon, John Lewis, Currys, Argos, Tesco and Asda.

The initiative, which will include deals on products in its fashion category, will not require membership. It will begin later this month.

The price-matching scheme will also be rolled out across Germany, France, Italy and Spain, following its launch in the US two weeks ago.

Rob Hattrell, vice-president at Ebay UK, said: “We know that customers in the UK want the best deal when they shop. Our Ebay deals programme has grown exponentially since its launch in 2009 and is now a firm favourite with the millions of customers who regularly shop on Ebay.

“We are confident in the strength of our deals already. But we’re giving our customers that confidence by also matching the price of our competitors.”

Ebay recorded 169 million active buyers across the world for the first quarter of 2017.
