Edinburgh Council vetoes out-of-town Debenhams

Edinburgh City Council bosses have rejected plans to build a new out-of-town Debenhams store after independent retailers complained it would “suck the life” out of their businesses.

The new department store - proposed at the out-of-town Fort Kinnaird shopping complex - was defeated by nine votes to four at a planning meeting, according to Edinburgh Evening News.

One leading city planning expert told the paper: “This signals a clear about-turn on the part of the council.

“They developed these sites and now they’re sending out a totally new message. Whether this is about shoring up the city, following years of tram-related roadworks, remains to be seen.”
