Esprit names former Inditex director as chief executive

Esprit has appointed the former group director of distribution and operations at Inditex, owner of rival Zara, as its chief executive.

The Hong-Kong listed company has drafted in Jose Manuel Martínez Gutiérrez to fill the position left open after Ronald Van Der Vis stepped down last month citing personal reasons.

Martínez, who will take up the role before September, managed Inditex’s distribution and global retail network. Prior to that, he was the country manager for the Zara brand across Scandinavia. He joined Inditex in 2003.

Analysts have viewed the appointment as a positive move for Inditex given Martínez’s strong retail background.

Earlier this year Inditex reported a 74% fall in first-half net profits.
