Esprit reveals 24.5% net profit growth

Young fashion chain Esprit has posted a 24.5% jump in net profit and a 25.6% increase in sales to HK$37.2 billion (£2.6 bn) over the year to June 30 2008.

Net profit at the Hong Kong based business hit HK$6.5bn (£454 million) over the period and operating profit at the retailer grew by 23.4% to HK$7.7bn (£538 million).

Esprit chairman and chief executive Heinz Krogner said: "The global economy is undoubtedly facing tough macro environment. It is during this time that a strong company like Esprit demonstrates how such a storm can be weathered."

The group's strong sale figures were driven by retail expansion over the period as retail space grew by 14.3% and controlled wholesale space grew by 18.5% over the period.

The Esprit group operates in more than 40 countries through more than 690 directly managed retail stores worldwide and about 14,500 controlled-space wholesale points of sale.
