Etsy pop-up heralds start of wider UK strategy

Etsy opened its first bricks-and-mortar store in the UK this weekend with a pop-up store that ran in London’s Covent Garden from Friday until Sunday.

The online platform which supports independent designers and retailers selling vintage homewares, accessories and fashion, invited designers to apply for their products to be included in the Christmas giftshop known as Etsy House.

Etsy is establishing wholesale relationships in key markets, one of which is said to be the UK. It launched Etsy Wholesale in the US in August, is member-based and charges a joining fee to retailers and a smaller transactional fee for wholesale purchase orders thereafter.

Vanesse Bertozzi, senior programme manager at Etsy, told Forbes: “Etsy has a long tradition of having a very close relationship with our seller community. It’s very exciting for us to think about these wholesale buyers — independent boutiques, museum stores, specialty shops, gift stores — as a new type of member on Etsy. Through Etsy Wholesale, we offer a platform for buyers and sellers to build relationships while also providing tools and special opportunities for them, as well.”
