It’s nearly that time of the year again – come September 6, Fashion’s Night Out will take over the well-trodden pavements of the country’s shopping destinations in celebration of all things retail and, more importantly, try to make us part with our hard-earned cash.
Set up four years ago in New York by US Vogue’s well-coiffed queen bee Anna Wintour, the annual event was originally an initiative to entice shoppers into stores to support the fashion industry during the tough early days of the economic meltdown. Now the event has been rolled out around the world, with countries including Australia, Mexico, Russia, France and Germany all joining the party.
This year London’s shopping landmarks will once again open their doors for one special evening of shopping, shopping and hopefully, more shopping. Drapers’ favourite king of print Jonathan Saunders has even created an exclusive T-shirt specifically for the evening at a very reasonable £18, with proceeds from all sales going to Refuge, the charity that works with vulnerable children and women who are victims of domestic violence.
You don’t have to be in London. Stores around the country are all taking part. And why keep it to one night only? Special shopping events and party evenings are a great way to tempt those spenders into store, so why not replicate the concept for your shoppers? While I’d personally encourage everyone to get out there and keep supporting our multiples and independents anyway, there’s nothing like a free drink or a 20% discount to entice people into a store.
Drapers will be reporting live from the evening, so be sure to check out all our coverage via our Twitter account (@Drapers). And do let us know if you’re planning on getting in on the fun at your store, so you can share your photos and videos with us.
