Ex-Apple boss John Browett resurfaces at Monsoon

Former Dixons and Apple retail boss John Browett has been appointed chief executive of Monsoon Accessorize.

Browett, who left Apple last year after just six months as its senior vice president of retail, won praise for his turnaround of electricals chain Dixons but has no background in fashion.

However, his online and international skills were seen as a draw for Monsoon Accessorize as the clothing and accessories retailer looks to expand. At present it has 1,053 stores in 74 countries.

Monsoon Accessorize founder Peter Simon told Drapers’ sister title Retail Week: “We conducted an extensive search for a new chief executive and John has the skills and experience to take Monsoon Accessorize to the next level.”

Browett will join on March 4. The business has been without a permanent boss since last July after the departure of managing director Peter Ridler. Chief commercial officer Steve Back replaced him on an interim basis.

The most recent figures show EBITDA before exceptionals fell 11.7% to £121.4m in the year to August 27, 2011.

Simon said in May he was keeping costs tight and reviewing its stores.
