Exclusive: Days department store to launch in Crawley

The exterior of Days in Carmarthen

Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group’s (EWM) new department store chain Days is gearing up to launch in Crawley next year, while its Bedford store is facing delays, Drapers can reveal.

Sources close to the matter have indicated that the new Days store in Crawley, West Sussex, will be located at 32-34 Queen’s Square.

It is not yet clear when it aims to open its doors, but one source indicated that exterior building works have recently completed, putting a timeframe for launch at roughly four to six months to allow for the fit-out.

The public square where the site is located has been recently redeveloped, and reopened earlier this month following a £3.2m refurbishment.

Meanwhile, Drapers understands that the opening of the Days store in Bedford, which was originally scheduled for November, has been delayed to summer 2018.

The store is in a former BHS unit at 13-21 Midland Road. Plans to extend and infill the first floor for additional sales space were submitted to the local council in April, and were approved.

The Bedford store would have been the second Days to open after its debut in Carmarthen in May.

A spokeswoman for EWM, which is owned by Philip Day, confirmed: “The store in Carmarthen has performed well so we can confirm that further Days stores will be opening in Bedford and Crawley.

“Enabling works are currently taking place on these sites, so the stores are due to open in spring/summer 2018.”

The business is targeting large towns and cities as part of plans to roll out Days to 50 locations across the UK.

The Carmarthen store stocks a total of 18 brands, 11 of which are owned by EWM, including Austin Reed, Peacocks, Jane Norman, Country Casuals and Jaeger.
