Extension planned for Meadowhall shopping centre

The Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield is set to grow by 330,000 sq ft with a new food and leisure extension.

The centre, home to around 230 retailers including Debenhams, House of Fraser, Jigsaw, Marks & Spencer, White Company and Zara, currently measures 1.4 million sq ft. The extension will take the size to 1.7 million sq ft.

Property firm British Land, which owns the centre, plans to seek permission for the new scheme by the middle of next year, according to Property Week.

The extension will include a number of new restaurants, a cinema and additional leisure activities.

In March the centre announced a £50m refurbishment scheme to mark its 25th year in business, to be completed at the end of 2017.

Meadowhall is Yorkshire’s most popular shopping destination and one of only six out-of-town super regional shopping centres in the UK.

Drapers has contacted British Land for comment.
