Fashion boosts John Lewis sales

Sales at John Lewis picked up compared to last week, with fashion sales up 7.3% for the week to October 4.

Total sales at John Lewis fell marginally by 0.5% to £51.55 million during the week.

John Lewis said the week had started off slowly due to the good weather on Sunday, but built to a "crescendo at 14%" at the end of the week on Saturday.

John Lewis said its Cambridge store continued to exceed expectations, Liverpool traded "extremely successfully" and Sheffield was the best performer of its established branches.

The weather helped to boost clothing sales across women's, men's and kids wear, with women's footwear breaking through a key turnover milestone last week.

John Lewis opened its Christmas Shop this week and said last Sunday got off to a strong start, giving the department store "renewed confidence" in the lead up to Christmas.
