Fashion climbs 4.9% as total sales fall at John Lewis

Fashion sales rose 4.9% at John Lewis last week, outperforming the wider business which fell 1.7% following the spike on Black Friday.

Total sales for the week to November 7 reached £144.5m, down from £147m the week before, but up 1.8% on the same week 2012.

Online sales increased by 22% at John Lewis for the week, totalling a third of overall trade for the second week running.

Cyber Monday added to the 500,000 customer orders across the network - nearly five times a normal week’s activity.

Fashion sales increased 4.9%, helped by strong sales of Christmas jumpers ahead of Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day on December 13.

Mobile and tablet users accounted for just over 50% of traffic to the site on Sunday December 1.

John Lewis also revealed the winner of its “Reworked” competition, which will see Matthew Fearon from Leicester recording a version of the soundtrack to its Christmas TV advert, ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, to be played on Christmas Day.
