Fashion drives John Lewis sales up 4.8%

New season fashion stock drove John Lewis sales up a “solid” 4.8% in the week to January 31 as the retailer came to the end of its financial year.

The best performance came from kidswear, followed by womenswear, including handbags in accessories, and then menswear.

Across the board fashion climbed 9.1% during the period, with the majority of sales taking place online which was up 18.7%.

In his final update of the trading year, managing director of John Lewis, Andy Street, thanked the business’s merchandising teams “who have ensured we end the year with the cleanest stocks for some time. This leaves us well placed to support the new season.”
