Fashion Fringe winner named as Haizhen Wang

Up and coming designer Haizhen Wang has been named as the winner of this year’s Fashion Fringe award.

The competition, which supports new design talent, was founded by Colin McDowell in 2003 and this year Burberry chief executive Christopher Bailey took on the role of Fashion Fringe chair.

Wang managed to pip fellow finalists Teija Eilola and Vita Gottlieb to the post and joins past Fashion Fringe winners including Erdem, Basso & Brooke and Corrie Nielsen.

He will receive support worth over £100,000, which includes financial backing, business planning advice to establish the business as well as further mentoring and a fully equipped studio at Somerset House for two years.

Wang said: “I’m really excited. It’s absolutely fantastic. It’s such an amazing opportunity to win. It’s my career’s turning point. I hope everyone enjoyed the show.”

Bailey said he had been “honoured” to chair the competition.

He added: “The level of talent and skill showcased not only by this evening’s winner, Haizhen Wang but also finalists Teija Eilola and Vita Gottlieb as well as the entire Fashion Fringe alumni throughout the selection process, has been remarkable.”

McDowell added: “I feel that these three designers were remarkably mature and every one of them could have shown on any professional catwalk. I don’t think it was easy for Christopher to choose a winner, but he took his role amazingly seriously. He devoted more time to these three people than any other chair. I always felt he was just a phone call away and there to offer counsel. That gave us all confidence.”
