Fashion is high street's 'star performer' in June

The UK high street enjoyed the best June in six years, helped by warmer weather and a weak performance in the comparable month last year.

Total like-for-like sales were up 1.3% last month, as the school holidays and sunshine offset the impact of the general election, BDO’s High Street Sales Tracker indicates.

Fashion was the “star performer” in June, as shoppers hunted for their summer wardrobes. Like-for-like sales were up 1.4% across the month. Sales were up 6% in week one and ended the month up 8%, although they dipped in the middle of the month around the time of the election.

Last June was the worst June in more than a decade, as a result of uncertainty caused by the European Union referendum.
