Fashion outperforms at John Lewis as new collections arrive

Fashion sales at John Lewis were up 3.8% for the week ending 25 March compared to the same period in 2016, driven by an 11.1% increase in womenswear sales.

Total sales across all categories at the department store chain fell 4.1% to £81.7m, due to the earlier timing of Easter this year.

“Sales in beauty, wellbeing and leisure were up 16.5% due to Mother’s Day and womenswear sales were up 11.1% due to the warmer weather and arrival of new collections including our new denim lifestyle brand And/Or,” said director for shop trade Maggie Porteous.

Fashion sales are up 2.5% for the first eight weeks of the John Lewis financial year, compared with the same period in 2016.
