Fashion outperforms homeware and lifestyle

The latest figures from the BDO High Street Sales Tracker, for the week to 2 September, have shown strong performance in fashion.

Total fashion like-for-like sales (compared with the same week last year, which also included a bank holiday weekend), were up by 5.24%, outperforming homeware and lifestyle. It is likely fashion sales were buoyed by back-to-school shopping and a cooler bank holiday weekend

In-store fashion sales were up 2.64% on last year. Non-store sales were up by 20%.

Overall, sales across all retail sectors were up by 4.22% this week, compared with a 2.77% rise in 2017. In-store sales were up 1.99%, which ends an eight-week negative run for like-for-like sales, despite the fact footfall was down by 1% this week.

Sales for the whole of August, however, were poor. For the month as a whole, in-store fashion sales fell by 3.6%.
