Fashion performs in tough week for John Lewis

John Lewis saw like-for-like sales fall 4.7% for the week ended May 31 but fashion posted an excellent performance with comparable sales ahead 5.6%.

John Lewis said that womenswear and kidswear were buoyant during the week with own-brand and branded clothing and footwear and handbags posting good gains. Menswear was led by branded fashion and accessories while kidswear was boosted by girlswear and kid's shoes which were boosted by the half term holiday.

John Lewis' London Oxford Street brand was its best performing of the week with sales up 5.6% while its relocated store at Liverpool One also beat targets and, in its first three days of trading, the store scored double that of its old shop.

John Lewis Direct saw sales rise 23% for the week.
