Fashion sales led John Lewis last week, with womenswear up 24% on last year and driving total turnover up 14% to £71.46m.
The weather in the week to May 24 “was perfect for department store shopping – heavy showers drove customers inside to spend time dreaming about summer holidays to come,” according to operations director Dino Rocos.
Fashion sales overall rose 18% but womenswear was the winner, with own-brands such as Somerset by Alice Temperley and Kin up 45% “as warm weather categories began to pick up”.
Women’s shoes were also strong performers, up 33%, with sandals up 97% compared with last year.
Online sales rose 31% with fashion again acting as the driving force, up 45% due to price matching and new season stock.
“We ended the month on a positive note; refreshed from the bank holiday weekend, feeling energetic and prepared for the busy weeks ahead which begin with the half term break this week,” Rocos said.
