Fashion sales crumble after bank holiday

Fashion sales fell by 7.8% year on year in the week ending 3 June, following the late May Bank Holiday weekend.

Figures from the BDO High Street Sales Tracker showed that clothing sales were down 4.63% and footwear sales were down 13.41%, marking the third successive week of falling in-store sales. Six out of the last 10 weeks have seen sales fall.

The figures compare to a strong base last year, when a late half term, good weather and the bank holiday boosted shoppers.

Despite this fall however, earlier this week BRC figures suggested that UK retail sales had bounced back in May with transaction volumes increasing by 2.8% on a like-for-like basis, compared with a 0.2% decrease in May 2017.
