Fashion sales dip as poor weather persists

Like-for-like fashion sales fell by 1.7% last week in comparison with the same week last year.

A second week of poor weather was partly to blame for 57% of respondents to BDO’s weekly sales tracker reporting negative sales growth in store. Across all retail categories, footfall was down by 2.8% in the week ending 28 January.

Shopping centres experienced the biggest decline in footfall, of 4.5%. Footfall on the high street was down by 2.5%, and on retail parks it fell 1.7%.

  • Maybe Drapers will carry out some analysis on parking charges? Shopping centres in particular have high charges. Impulsive shopping trips are becoming a thing of the past.

  • Not if you've got the right product. It is January/February, therefore WINTER. Customers want product relevant to the time of year, not delusional marketing departments who have no idea of how retail works telling us on what should be sold when. Shows how ridiculous brands are by shipping summer products in January that nobody wants. Will they ever learn?
