Fashion sales slipped 0.9% for the week to November 23 due to strong comparisons against Black Friday, which falls a week later this year.
However kidswear experienced a rise of 31.8% on last year, with schoolwear up 53.4% and all other key areas reporting double digit growth.
Womenswear sales grew by 4.1% for the week as the colder weather encouraged shoppers to wrap up. Menswear and sportswear were up 2.3% overall with own brand and footwear up 23.3% and 10.2% respectively.
Overall sales for the week were up 2.1% to £111.91m, with online sales soaring 9.4%.
High Wycombe was the best performing store of the week, up 22.3%, followed by Newbury, which was up 22.7% and Chester, which grew by 20.2%.
David Barford, director of selling at John Lewis, said: “The cold is never far away and Christmas gift buying is gaining momentum as the holiday season draws closer. We are well placed to maximise the opportunities in the coming weeks.”
