Fashion sales dive 12.77% in mid-January

Fashion was the weakest sector on the high street during mid-January, with both footwear and clothing in decline, according to BDO’s sales tracker.

The sector saw like-for-like sales drop 12.77% in the week to January 20, with the bad weather keeping people away from the shops. The figures are based on around 70 mid-sized chains, such as Hobbs, White Stuff and Aurora-owned retailers.

Footfall in the high street fell 8.4%.

Other sectors such as homeware also struggled, falling 4.5%, but, as highlighted by independent analyst Nick Bubb, it was fashion that drove total high street sales down by 10.96% - the lowest since April 2012.

Non-store medium chains “flourished” during the week, with sales up nearly 40% “as heavy snowfall persuades customers to avoid the high streets”.
