Fashion sales down ahead of Black Friday

Fashion like-for-like sales were down 2.7% in the week to 19 November as shoppers held off for Black Friday discounts.

According to the BDO High Street Sales Tracker, there have been negative like-for-like fashion sales for seven out of the last eight weeks.

Over 60% of fashion retailers reported negative like-for-like sales while overall high street sales were up 0.3% off a weak base of -4.5% for the same period last year.

Shopping centres particularly suffered as footfall declined by 2.8%, while the high street saw a lighter dip of 1.5%.

Only retail parks felt an uplift thanks to unpleasant weather as footfall rose by 0.5%.

  • These figures are hardly surprising. The tase has to stop trying to create demand where none exists.
