John Lewis has reported a 7.6% drop in fashion sales for the week to April 2, as cooler temperatures and the timing of Easter hampered year-on-year comparisons.

Total sales for the week at John Lewis were down 2.3% to £83.33m.
Sales of handbags increased 4.3% for the week while women’s shoes were up 6.1%.
Paula Nickolds, commercial director at John Lewis said the timing of Easter hit sales, as it lost a day trading in stores compared to the same week last year.
“When comparing the two weeks of trade around Easter this year versus last year, sales were up 9.4% and we can be very pleased with the way our Easter activity was received by customers. Cooler weather compared to last year continues to impact [fashion] sales and the two week Easter period figure was up 2.2%.
She added: “With the arrival of spring and an additional day in shops from last year’s Easter Sunday, we are well placed for the week ahead.”
