Fashion sales fall at John Lewis

John Lewis recorded a 1.7% decrease in fashion sales this week as the “fine weather and the excitement of sport” saw a drop in footfall on Saturday.

Overall sales rose by only 0.2% to £71.7m.

The “mixed result” in the fashion division saw a 174% increase in the sale of sunglasses from last year, with Ray-Ban a “particular highlight”.

Women’s sandals and suncare grew by 18%, while the department store’s own brand menswear was up 24% from last year. John Lewis & Co achieved “an astounding” 61% jump in sales from last year.

Online sales experienced a 16% increase from last year.

Chester was the strongest performing branch across the week as a whole, up 14.5%.

Twenty-four John Lewis outlets saw a drop in sales this week. Tunbridge Wells was hardest hit, falling by 23.6%, followed by Poole, which was down by 18.7%.

As the store heads into the final week of its clearance Sale, the division is “ahead of plan” and making way for new trans-seasonal deliveries.
